Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t play sports, can I still have a sports massage?

Sports Massage is not just for athletes; anyone leading an active, healthy life can benefit from this type of massage to keep their body in check. In fact, the regular use of sports massage therapy can prevent a variety of injuries. Sports Massage is great for relieving built up tension, restoring balance and aiding relaxation.

How often should I book in for a sports massage?

How often you have massage therapy depends on many factors relating to what your injury/problem area is and what your goals are. Are you after some maintenance work? Then perhaps once per month might be enough, especially if you take the time to do a bit of homework. Do you have a long standing issue that you wish to get addressed properly? Then a number of sessions spread over a few weeks would be more appropriate. The number will depend on how much you do the exercises you get to help increase your mobility and how long the problem has been there but often 3-4 will clear most of it up.

Are you an athlete in hard training? Perhaps once per week, or more, leading up to a competition.

Is a sports massage painful?

No. The sports massage therapist will work within your pain threshold, some techniques may be more uncomfortable initially but should ease off after a short period of time. Pain is a personal emotion which everyone tolerates differently. It is important you communicate with your therapist if you feel the pressure is too uncomfortable.

At certain points during the massage ‘trigger points’ may be found, i.e. tender areas that may be localised or refer elsewhere. It is important to tell the massage therapist when you experience any increase of discomfort and certainly if this becomes outside of your comfort range. The last thing we are looking to do is add more discomfort on top of any you are already experiencing and it is very easy to adjust the level of pressure to suit you.

What happens during a treatment?

A full medical history will be taken and you will be asked what you want to achieve from the treatment. Your posture will be analysed including looking at musculoskeletal imbalances and specific problem areas. Your massage treatment will then be set according to your body’s needs. The majority of the treatment is hands-on work, it will include different techniques as well as possible mobilisations and stretches. You will be sent away with an aftercare plan.

What should I wear?

Wearing a t-shirt and shorts is advised. Depending on the area of the body that treatment is required, you may be asked to strip down to your top e.g. massage to your back. We use towels to cover you and always keep your modesty in mind. It is important that you feel comfortable at all times.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24 hours notice to cancel an appointment. Clients who cancel an appointment with less than 24 hours notice will be billed 50% of the price of the scheduled service. Clients who do not show up for a scheduled appointment or notify us in advance, will be billed for the full price of the scheduled service. We understand that emergencies and illnesses can arise, therefore last minute cancellations due to things such as verifiable emergencies, illnesses or inclement weather will generally not result in any missed session charges, however this is to be determined at the practitioner's discretion.
